| The string of east coast islands begins in the north with the Perhentian islands. Located 20km off Kuala Besut, Terengganu, Perhentian consists of two large islands known as Perhentian Besar and Perhentian Kecil, and a group of smaller islets Northwest of the Perhentians. There are over 20 dive sites here, generally made up of boulders which slope down to an average depth of about 14metres to maximum 18metres. Terumbu Tiga is one of the best. The relatively strong currents here encourage the growth of large soft corals including dendronephtya and gorgonian sea fans. Just north of Terumbu Tiga, another site called Tanjung Besi, faces the open sea and is a good place to see larger pelagic including various species of reef sharks. This site also has interesting caves and overhangs, which makes for good spots to observe moray eels and other marine life. Popular with backpackers, the Perhentian islands boast a multitude of chalets and resorts with plenty of choices when it comes to food, accommodation and night entertainment. | |
| Visibility | Ranges from 15 - 25 metres | | Dive Sites Condition | The two paradise islands of Perhentian Besar (big) and Perhentian Kecil (small) lie around 21 kilometers off the coast of Kuala Besut on the eastern coast of the Malay Peninsular. They used to be a stop off point for traders and merchants plying the waterways, hence the name "one stop island". The islands now form part of the Terengganu Marine Park and are home to many species of reef fish, coral and other marine creatures. There are several dive sites around the two islands all quickly and easily accessible by local dive boat. | | Accessibility | Dive sites are accessible within 10 - 30 minutes from the resort by speedboat. | | Marine Life | Divers prize Perhentian's small constellation of rocky islets for their giant soft corals, large schools of pelagic fish, and the nocturnal sea shells which are sometimes spotted in the shallow channel between the two main islands. | | Dive Calendar | Moderate to swift currents. Water temperature ranges from 27 - 30 degrees Celsius & the resort operates from March to October only. |
